We repair objects, we recreate relationships. At the school of circular economies at Lab Barona

We repair objects, we recreate relationships. At the school of circular economies at Lab Barona

In 2022-23, the 4th and 5th classes of the Capponi primary school and the 1st of the Gramsci middle school, are involved in educational activities and workshops at school and at the Lab Barona Repair Cafè with the aim of contributing to increase knowledge and awareness among pupils on the importance of environmental sustainability in everyday life. In particular, teachers and students will work on the theme of the circular economy

Starting from the circular economy, the project promotes attention to the new life of objects, through re-use and repair. The project will also be an opportunity to socialize and exchange experiences, to clash the disposable culture, to promote the good practice of reuse and therefore reduce the amount of waste produced.

The project works closely with the Lab Barona Repair Cafè, a space located in via Ettore Ponti 15, a few meters from the Capponi and Gramsci schools, launched in 2021 by La Cordata with the aim of offering the neighborhood a space where objects can be repaired, materials can be recycled giving new life to objects and at the same time a place for the exchange of skills, relationships and opportunities to create solidarity and mutual aid. With the project we want to strengthen the bond started with the neighborhood and create a new channel of collaboration with the surrounding schools in order to raise awareness and activate the inhabitants on circular economy issues. In this sense, the identified target, young students between the ages of 9 and 12, could be a driving force for the involvement of parents and potential new users of the Lab Barona Repair Cafè who will be able, even at the end of the project, to continue to have a place that in the neighborhood offers the possibility to repair, recycle, reuse.

Objectives to be achieved:

The project aims to increase the knowledge and awareness of primary and secondary school students on the importance of environmental sustainability in everyday life to clash the ongoing climate and environmental crisis and promote understanding of their role as protagonists of the ecological transition.

In particular:

  1. The project intends to increase the knowledge and skills of teachers and pupils of the Capponi primary school and Gramsci lower secondary school on issues related to environmental sustainability, in particular on the concept of circular economy, reuse and recycling.
  2. The project intends to promote the activation of pupils and teachers also with the involvement of the educational community to identify concrete solutions for daily actions that respect the environment.

To achieve the objectives, the three main activities are: teacher training, student training and laboratory activities. On the sidelines there is the activation of the “educating community” or the network of organizations and associations of the territory and in particular of the most peripheral part of the Barona district, which are informed, involved and activated to support the laboratory activities

Participation to the Evaluation Committee of the Compagnia di San Paolo call for proposal Ideare

Participation in the selection of projects for the Ideas-Are call for proposals of the Compagnia di San Paolo

Participation in the work of analysis of the received proposals and selection of the best project ideas in order to ensure their funding.

The Idee-are Call for proposals was organized to support projects capable of developing innovative forms of applied research in the field of social sciences addressing the consequences of demographic changes in the Piedmont region (north-west of Italy).

The actions financed were implemented following three work axes: the development of a context analysis, the application of a pilot action and the strengthening of networks and collaborations between public authorities, enterprises and the third sector.

Particular importance has been assigned to the impact for the territory and to the ability to arouse interest in

local actors both for the exploitation of results and for the possibility of applying them in the future.

In this context, a multidisciplinary team was formed to study the proposals and select the 5 most promising. The work was carried out in two phases: a first analysis of the ideas (concept notes) and a second dedicated to analyse the complete proposal.

The team included several figures: demographer, economist, geographer and programming expert. The latter was covered by a PuntoSud evaluator who studied the projects, defined a specific evaluation system and participated in the coordination and evaluation sessions.

Crowdfunding, promotion and maintenance of urban green areas

Crowdfunding, promotion and maintenance of urban green areas

The aim of the project was to develop the knowledge and a critical sense among citizens on global interdependence and on the sense of co-responsibility of society on climate change. In line with this objective, were selected 24 projects implemented by CSOs active in environmental campaigning and advocacy initiatives, financed and promoted, aimed at promoting and caring for urban green in metropolitan cities.

The project was part of the “There isn’t a PLANet B project! Win-win strategies and small actions for big impacts on climate change”, funded by the European Commission as part of the DEAR (Development Education and Raising Awareness) program and was aimed at CSOs wishing to promote challenges related to climate change, stimulating a continuous reflection on the importance of carrying out inclusive shared actions, capable of initiating individual practices and / or stimulating sustainable policies.

The objective of the 2 calls launched during the project was the selection and funding of 24 micro-projects in metropolitan cities, which, through awareness-raising, information, communication and advocacy actions, help to promote and take care of urban green. The funded actions, implemented by CSOs, provided for the implementation of activities that were inspired by the general objectives of NOPLANETB and the sustainable development goal 11 (SDG11) and contributed to the promotion of greenery in cities.

In particular, awareness-raising, information, advocacy and communication activities were financed which – directly and / or by way of demonstration – had one or more of the following as examples:

  • Respect for the natural heritage of cities and support for citizens to use and access green areas;
  • Dissemination of the culture of respect for green areas in cities;
  • Dissemination, promotion and / or strengthening of a new culture of urban green and public areas as common goods;
  • Promotion of the link between actions that increase the supply of urban green areas and urban regeneration initiatives with the utmost attention to the use of green areas by citizens.

In addition, those initiatives that were innovative, reinforced (and / or connected) to existing initiatives at local, national and / or European level, and, in their implementation, involve different bodies were awarded.

B Circular, fight climate change!

B Circular, fight climate change!

The project aimed to foster citizens awareness on risks associated with climate change and to support constant reflection on circular development models capable of integrating the social, economic, institutional and environmental dimensions of actions. In line with this objectives, 17 projects of third sector entities were selected, financed and promoted through 2 calls.

The general objective of the project was to contribute to the development of knowledge and critical sense among citizens on global interdependence and on society’s sense of co-responsibility on climate change. This objective was achieved through the promotion and active commitment of third sector entities active in environmental campaigning and advocacy initiatives that promoted effective actions on climate change and sustainable lifestyles.

The 2 calls supported projects aimed at pursuing the following SDGs:

Responsible production and consumption (SDG 12), therefore stimulating responsible production methods and approaches to consumption in order to ‘do more and better with less’. This goal was achieved by increasing the benefits in terms of well-being produced by economic activities, reducing the consumption of resources and pollution throughout the life cycle of the products, greater use of renewable energy sources, recycling and reuse of waste and at the same time improving the quality of life. For example, by financing systemic approaches and cooperation between the supply chain actors, from the producer to the final consumer and raising awareness of consumers towards more sustainable lifestyles through campaigns aimed at increasing awareness.

Fight against climate change (SDG 13), therefore contributing to take actions to combat climate change, increasing citizens’ awareness of possible individual and collective solutions to develop more sustainable and resilient economic systems. For example, by financing systemic approaches and multi-stakeholder cooperation to tackle climate change.

The projects awarded had these common points:

  • they used innovative approaches or intervention models or tools;
  • they have significantly promoted eco-innovation and the circular economy;
  • they have demonstrated clarity in the description of the objectives and in the identification of the targets (with evident measurement of the effects);
  • they have proposed collaborations and networking activities with other subjects, public-private partnerships, collaborations with local authorities and companies

Active citizenship and environmental / social sustainability in Milan

Active citizenship and environmental / social sustainability in Milan

PuntoSud selected, financed and promoted 12 events that dealt with the issues of environmental and social sustainability, encouraging 12 events were an active participation of the inhabitants of 6 Social Housing residences and 6 university residences managed by the benefit company Redo Sgr, during the Pre-COP 2021, held in Milan, where delegations from about 40 countries arrived.

The initiative aimed to create a schedule of events which, in addition to being in line with the topics covered by the pre-COP26 in Milan, had an inclusive approach to sustainability, paying particular attention to the involvement and awareness of youth, people in vulnerable situations and those living in a peripheral context.

The objective of selecting, financing and promoting events that dealt with the issues of environmental and social sustainability, favoring the active participation of the inhabitants of all the residences of Redo SGR, has been widely achieved, and also the objective of creating relationship between inhabitants of the residences and people of the neighborhoods in which the residences are inserted, as well as with the associations of the territories.

In line with the objectives, the initiative supported the active commitment of third sector entities, which were able to promote effective actions in climate change and sustainable lifestyles and to animate, motivate and involve the target groups. The expected results – selection of at least 12 CSOs entities for the implementation of events in the Redo residences involving at least 75% of the inhabitants of the residences – have been achieved.

In July 2021 PuntoSud launched a call for events (in addition to the direct invitation for 2 entities) open to CSOs operating in Milan; the application form has been drawn up in a very simple but rigorous way in order to allow candidates to access this opportunity, obviating the disincentive mechanism relating to the classic complexity of applications and, on the other hands, to allow the evaluators to have enough elements to evaluate the proposal. All CSOs were eligible for participation and all events were deemed eligible and then funded. In particular, the initiatives highlighted the character of innovation and originality, were consistent with the general schedule of the initiative, involved in the implementation not only the “social managers”, the tenants of the residences services, but also the inhabitants of the neighborhoods, created connections with the territory and above all with the actors who insist on it and have carried out good communication of the event to maximize participation.

NOPLANETB HUB: co-programming against climate change

NOPLANETB is the first Italian HUB that aims to promote the spread of sustainable lifestyles by incubating, co-designing and financing communication, advocacy and awareness-raising ideas and initiatives promoted by small organizations of Italian civil society and aimed at raising awareness of citizens on the topic of climate change

Starting from 2017, and thanks to the There isn’t a PLANet B! Win-win strategies and small actions for big impacts on climate change, funded by the European Commission under the DEAR program (Development Education and Raising Awareness), PuntoSud has experimented, for the first time in Italy, the tool of financial support to third parties, a financing mechanism through which European Union funds have been disbursed to medium and small organizations.

Financial support is a tool to include in the financing mechanisms, thanks to the guarantees offered by the intermediary organization, small-sized organizations, which often have very limited managerial and financial skills, but innovative, replicable and scalable ideas and which are very active and capillaries in the territory for the reference community. It also allows organizations to participate in calls with simpler application and selection procedures.

The attention towards this tool has grown considerably in recent years, so the European Union considers it a key component of its calls for proposals.

Thanks to the experience acquired, PuntoSud guarantees, before launching the calls to finance the Organizations, to identify a particularly urgent topic of collective interest with CSOs and to develop a shared strategy between the donor and the PuntoSud Foundation.

PuntoSud monitors the project implementation process and the progress of the entire process and ensures that the results achieved are constantly checked. Furthermore, the CSOs are accompanied both in planning and in managing the funds, organizing training sessions for the same CSOs.

This training, detailed on the basis of the interests and characteristics of the small and medium-sized civil society organizations financed, includes meetings and workshops for sharing design methods and rules and project managing, as well as training on relevant topics for projects (crowdfunding, campaigning, storytelling, social marketing).

A helpdesk service is provided and is available to all funded organizations for the entire duration of the project. This service provides continuous support, guidance and answers to specific questions such as the preparation of management tools and the sharing of good practices among the financed organizations.

NOPLANETB has the communication as a transversal element at all levels due to the relevance it has in initiating a change on the issue of climate change, and to promote the development of a solid network among the organizations financed to start the development of strategic partnerships, or strengthen them.

To date, 6 calls have been launched, funding and supporting 58 organizations.

The project ‘Result Based Financing, un motore di cambiamento per i servizi pediatrici” implemented by Fondazione Corti aims to contribute to strengthening the health system of Northern Uganda, promoting innovative instruments for the effective management of maternal, child and pediatric health services for the population of the Acholi region.

Therefore the specific objectives identified are:

  1. Ensuring better access to effective medical care to the most vulnerable population groups in Northern Uganda, focusing in particular on child health as a driver for local development
  2. Improve the quality and effectiveness of pediatric health services and increase the empowerment of healthcare personnel, thanks to adherence to quality standards and monitoring of performance in the management of services
  3. Promote innovative models of health management in development settings, able to improve the quality, effectiveness and sustainability of health services.

In order to achieve these objectives, the following results should be reached:

  1. Provide effective and quality medical care to children in the districts of Gulu, Amuru and Agago who need hospitalization in the pediatric departments of Lacor Hospital and Kalongo Hospital
  2. Increased the quality of service in the pediatric departments of the two hospitals and enhanced the skills, motivation and sense of belonging of the health staff, through the introduction of specific quality standards and a Result Based Financing mechanism
  3. Validated and promoted the Result Based Financing model as an on-the-job training tool and as an engine to improve access to health care and quality of health services in contexts of high health, social and economic vulnerability.

Main activities

The purpose of the contract is to define the study of the management model introduced, in order to produce evidence in terms of value added in the quality and economic sustainability of the services provided.The proposed model, in fact, proposes the activation of virtuous mechanisms linked to the introduction of a lever(Result Based Financing) not only modifies the donor-implementer ratio (increasing theresponsibility of the latter) but launches internal processes (commitment, behavior) more orientedefficient use of resources based on the number of people cared for and quality of service.
To meet these objectives, the external evaluating body will therefore have to guarantee:

  • Support to project partners for the completion of a project “theory of change”, with the aim of highlighting and agreeing the individual priority processes of change (mechanisms).
  • The development of a monitoring system, able to systematically detect specific information related to the measurement of these mechanisms.
  • The implementation of two independent evaluation exercises (including the creation of two written reports):
    • One in the first year with the aim of testing the validity of the monitoring system during the initial implementation phase and, if necessary, identifying any corrective and / or integrative forms; •
    • One in the final phase with the aim of evaluating the efficiency of the implementation system adopted and the implementation of the model (actual implementation, impacts, sustainability, lessons learned, possible scalability).
