The two and a half-year project Environmental Forum was intended to coordinate a group of environmental non-governmental organizations (from Croatia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, Kosovo under UNSCR 1244, and Turkey) interested and involved in the EU enlargement process. The selection was made with the idea to include only two NGOs per country. However after consultations with the Commission taking into considerations the quality of the applications as well as geographical location and area of operation of NGOs, it was finally decided to increase the number of NGOs from Serbia, Albania and FYRoM to 3, and a decrease the NGOs from Kosovo.
The project was financed by the European Commission – Directorate General for Environment (DG ENV) and managed by punto.sud in partnership with Pescares (leading agency), an Italian company offering services and technical assistance towards the sustainable use of natural resources, and The Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP), an independent UK not for profit research organisation dedicated to advancing an environmentally sustainable Europe through the analysis and development of policy, and dissemination of research results.
Three main components of the project are likely to benefit the NGOs involved as well as requiring their active contribution:
- The organisation of National Preparatory Meetings;
- The organisation of Annual Meetings with the European Commission representatives;
- The development on an internet based communication and information sharing.
Among other activities, punto.sud was involved in the creation of a specific project website (no longer on-line) and a helpdesk service specifically tailored for users from the above-mentioned countries. The helpdesk allowed users to submit questions, requests or comments and receive prompt replies. It also provided an easy and practical “entry point” for organisations attracted by the possibility of having a “tailored” access to information through the submission of specific questions related to the EU enlargement process and EU policies.
