The project Spreading of immigration’s positive contribution to the European society: comics on immigrants’ real life histories in Italy, Spain, Hungary and Denmark aims at giving a correct representation of the lifes of immigrants in Europe, valorising, on this regard, their contribution to the countries of destination.
The project, financed by the EC – DG Freedom, Security and Justice under the budget line INTI – Pilot Projects for Integration of Third Country Nationals, contributed to the sensitisation of 50.000 young Europeans students in four countries (Italy, Denmark, Spain and Hungary) through the creation and distribution of a graphic novel on the basis of immigrants’ real life histories collected through in-depth interviews and during several research works realised by the partner organisations within their activities.
We wanted to tell immigrants’ real life histories with the purpose of trying to fight against prejudices and the lack of knowledge that characterise the imaginery of the immigration phenomenon. The choice of the comic matches the need to offer an innovative mean of communication to transform biographical research materials into stories that are readable by a wider public that might be unconnected with the academic diffusion. The graphic novel, published in four different languages, is mainly targeted to lower and upper secondary school students.
The project was implemented in three stages:
The research: research and analysis of immigrants’ real life histories in the 5 European contexts of reference; definition, narrative choiches and study of the most widespread prejudices and stereotypes.
The comic: creation of a comic consisting of 5 stories on immigration, printed in 4 European languages (Italian, Spanish, Danish and Hungarian). Every country realises a comic set in its context with the collaboration of a professional screen player and comic designer. The 5 stories have then been gathered in a single volume that has been printed in the 4 local languages f the partner countries.
The diffusion: promotion and diffusion of the comic at institutions, schools, cooperatives, diaspora associations and bodies that deal with intercultural issues and that work with young people. The aim of this phase was to involve teachers and educators that are interested in these issues so that they use the comic within their activities. The copies of the comic are distributed for free.
